History

"The words partnering and alliancing have now become much more common, but it wasn't always the case. There were no guidance manuals, instruction books or other companies building the collaborative competencies to initiate and sustain true relationships. Way back in the early 90's, JCP was designing and running programmes to change the organisational culture towards one of empowerment and profitable cooperation."

Some 20 years ago, the founders of the JCP movement wrote one of the seminal books about partnering (Beyond Negotiation) that started JCP on the collaborative journey. Perhaps it is worth quoting:

"Beyond negotiation means dealing with the reality of embarking on a long-term continuous relationship, rather than any short-term, one-of-a-kind interaction. Thus the concepts presented here have application in almost all interpersonal activities where one party desires to influence the behaviour of the other over time."

JCP planned and pioneered the relationship journey. Now others are following.

It was MTRC who first invited JCP to Hong Kong in 1998 to provide partnering consultancy services for all of the Tseung Kwan O Extension project teams. There is now a permanent and well-established office and 50 more partnering commissions undertaken in the past 6 years.

We are proud to say that the Tseung Kwan Extension opened four months ahead of schedule with HK$1BN savings directly attributable to partnering and we have continued to provide partnering services to MTRC for the Penny’s Bay Line and the Tung Chung Cable Car project. The latter is being run as a target cost pain/gain arrangement with full involvement of the contractor from the concept design stage. It is the most advanced partnering programme in Hong Kong where as part of the partnering services we are engaged to provide: behaviour analysis and coaching, psychometric profiling, negotiation skills coaching, value management and risk management facilitation.

We are also proud to say that we are currently doing a lot of successful work for Government on 12 major projects, we have helped Cathay Pacific with their aircraft engineering maintenance program and the Airport Authority with several projects including the East Hall Extension which finished 3 months ahead of schedule whilst accommodating 30 million passengers a year.

The work we do is not a job; we are all here because this is what we want to do.

Success

"We are a small company, but we work with major players and big numbers. The fuel partnership, that we helped develop between Nuclear Electric, Scottish Nuclear and British Nuclear Fuels, saved £1 billion in the first year and took a further £1.8 billion out over the next year. Their previous contract had taken 7 years to negotiate; with our facilitation the new one took 7 months.

The Hong Kong Mass Transit Rail Co., for whom we provided partnering facilitation and consultancy services, saved HK$1,000M Hong Kong and opened 4 months ahead of schedule.

The big players come to us because they know that we can help them deliver, because our experience in our field proves it. We do not advertise or cold call; we work from recommendation.
